December 2, 2010 New Family Worship
I read this quote today and wanted to share it here. Richard Baxter is one of those old Puritans that has influenced my life and thinking in a big way. His book The Reformed Pastor is something that I truly believe every pastor needs to read. It is not just for the Senior or Lead pastor but for the Student, Children, Worship Pastors.
Baxter said this about family worship:
We must have a special eye upon families, to see that they are well ordered, and the duties of each relation performed. The life of religion, and the welfare and glory of both the Church and the State, depend much on family government and duty. If we suffer the neglect of this, we shall undo all…. I beseech you, therefore, if you desire the reformation and welfare of your people, do all you can to promote family religion.
May our families continue to grow closer to Christ together in their homes and not just a one hour gathering on a Sunday morning.

December 1, 2010 Don’t Stay the Same
Paul dealt with an issue that we are stilling with today. Amazing how the Bible can point those kinds of things out. Maybe it is RELEVANT after all (please note sarcasm).
“So should I just continue in my sin since I am under grace?” That question has come up from multiple people as we have been going through the Story series. Paul gives a definitive answer in Romans 6:1-2. His answer is a powerful NO! In fact Paul considers that very question to be absurd. Here is why that question doesn’t make sense.
God’s glory and his majesty is not defined by me or you. God is God whether you and I exist. He is not made more holy or glorious because of how good or bad we look. It doesn’t just stop there. As we grow and we gain a better understanding of the depth of grace that has been lavished on us our response is not a desire to sin, but to obey. I don’t look at what Christ has done in my life by his grace and mercy and walk away with a “ho-hum” attitude toward sin.
God, through his Word, reveals the depth of my sin. His Spirit in me brings about a change in where the sin that I once enjoyed is now detestable to me. His grace gives me the strength in those times when I fall, to get up and continue down this dirt road called sanctification.
So as we continue to focus on the Christ-centered story that is the Bible, let the grace and love of Christ move you to good works. Not works that bring about salvation, but works that flow from a heart that has been saved. Joy is to be our motive for obedience.

November 29, 2010 Jesus Changes Everything
It has been a while since I posted something on the blog. I have said this before that when things start to get crazy busy on the schedule, the blog will be one of the first things to go. I love the opportunity to write and share with Capstone readers as well as other readers about different things that I am thinking. I consider it an honor that you would take 3-5 minutes and actually read something that I have written, but there are other things that are of greater importance and sometimes they require extra attention.
It was so good to have Walt back yesterday at the Gathering. If you were not able to join us because you were gone for the holiday weekend, then you really need to check out the podcast. I wrote a brief recap of the message here. The understanding of life change flowing from the inside-out is an understanding that flows from the Gospel.
If we could muster up the change needed to please God, then what is the point of the cross? What is the point of Christ’s death? Would his death not be in vain? Instead God, by the Holy Spirit, begins the work on the inside. That inside work will always result in fruit that is seen on the outside. There will be fruit if Christ is at work in your life. Walt brought up the way that we dress as an example.
Do you dress like a child of God? We really aim this question at ladies a lot of times (there is a reason for that). Are you dressing in a way that points to God or to yourself? What do you want people to see? This is not to say that you should walk around in a loose-fitting sweatsuit all the time. Some of you though want to show off your two-piece breast and thigh dinner and you forget that your hope should be in Christ and not in your body. How you dress reflects Christ.
Dressing in a conservative manner does not mean that you are a better christian. That is just one area that we chose to bring up yesterday. So what are some things that have changed in your life because of Christ? What are the changes that you have made because of the Holy Spirit’s work in your heart? I would love to hear some comments from you.

November 18, 2010 Urgent Request
I read this post today from JD Greear’s blog today. JD is the pastor of Summit Church in NC. God is doing so many great things at Summit and I wanted to pass on this story for our folks at Capstone. I pray that this will continue to open our eyes to needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ all around the world. This is very serious and I would appreciate everyone getting involved how they can.
Here are some details that JD wrote on his blog:
I am writing with an urgent request and a call to immediate action.
Sayed Mossa is a new believer in Afghanistan who is in jail in Afghanistan because he decided, of his own free choice, to follow Jesus. In this letter he managed to smuggle out through the hands of a Westerner, he describes daily beatings, torture, and sexual molestation. He stands to be executed for his decision to follow Jesus next week.He has a wife and 6 children, one of whom is disabled.
Part of me flushes with anger when I consider the price America has paid to help Afghanistan escape from the Taliban, and think that this is how the new government will treat its own people. Is this what we sacrificed to produce? Is freedom of conscience and freedom of speech not a fundamental right of human beings everywhere?
Here is what I am asking you to do:
- Pray. Like the early church for Peter in Acts 12. Summit Church, this is our brother. This is a father with children. He is being imprisoned and faces execution for doing what we do freely each Sunday. Pray that Sayed will be released and that he will not falter under persecution.
- Write your Congressman or Senator. Put feet to your prayers. President Obama and our government can put pressure on President Karzai to release him. That was worked before. As this article explains, all it will take is a nod from President Karzai and he would be released. You can contact the White House or write to your state representative. This past Sunday was the national Sunday to pray for the persecuted church; this is a good way to put that into action.
- To my Muslim friends who may be reading this blog, can I ask that you do what you can to call for a stay on this execution and full religious freedom in Afghanistan? I was with several of you last week at the Global Faith Forum in Keller, Tx, where you were clear that you cherished freedom of religion in America. You said that you wished that majority Muslim nations enjoyed the same freedom. I believed you when you said that. Now would be the time for you to do something about that. It is one thing for Christians to call for a stay on this execution; it would be even more powerful if you would do it. His life is in your hands.

November 10, 2010 What Consumes You
I admit that I am not the most creative guy on the planet. In fact I would be willing to submit myself to being considered in the lower echelon of creativity. I also will admit that I am not very artsy or artistic (whatever the right word is). I was laughing with Josh, our worship intern, the other day when he started talking about the awesome camera angles and stuff from a movie he watched. I am happy that he is that guy, because I am no where close to being that guy. When I watch a movie, I am simply watching it for entertainment value (sadly that is lacking in movies right now). In fact, I rarely go see the “Oscar” movies because they tend to not entertain.
I fear that we do that as worship leaders. As worship leaders, most of us I would say have a beyond average understanding of music and tend to be a little extra creative. The only problem that I have is that sometimes we talk more about the music than we do about the God that we are serving. I love writing music and I love trying to get better at it. I love singing songs that help express things about my relationship with God that I haven’t been able to put into words. In the end, I love my Jesus more than I do the singing.
You may think this is an exaggeration, but if we stopped doing music at Capstone for a period of time I would still love my Jesus and look forward to gathering with the Stoners. Why? Because it is not the music that I am consumed with, it’s Jesus.
Worship Leader, are you more interested in cool phrases and awesome chord structures and new tones on a guitar more than you are about Jesus? I promise you that when you lead, it is obvious.

November 9, 2010 There is a Bigger Rescue Coming
This past Sunday we titled the message God to the Rescue. The Israelites were at the edge of the Red Sea with no place to go. As we emphasize each week at the Gathering: Moses is not the central character of the Story, Jesus is the main character. Yes God provided a FREAKING awesome rescue plan, but there was something bigger happening. (Read About God’s Rescue)
Sometimes we focus on one little dot that we miss the whole picture. I beg you to not loose sight of the BIG story. God was not just saving the Israelites that day. God’s plan of reconciling the world to himself was bigger than that Red Sea moment. The rescue that is needed by mankind is bigger than what the Israelites needed from the Egyptians.
You cannot rescue yourself. What don’t you read that line again out loud. You cannot rescue yourself. The rescue is orchestrated and carried out by God alone. In fact, the Bible would say that your rescue is primarily not even about you. The rescue that is provided through the cross is primarily about the glory of God. I know we like to think that we are the center of universe, but I think it will serve us better if you quickly realize that we are not.
Instead our God sent his son into a broken world. His son lived a perfect life and died a sinner’s death. Jesus Christ resurrected on the third day and at this very moment is sitting at the right hand of God the Father interceding for you and for me. Not interceding for Moses or Elijah or Isaiah. He is interceding for you and me. He is our compassionate high priest. He is our gentle King. Jesus is our faithful shepherd. Through Christ there is rescue from the separation between mankind and it’s creator. A bridge that could never be crossed by man, but only by God. God came to our rescue when we did not deserve it or want it.
Be in awe of God and how he rescued the Israelites. There are no words to express how awesome that moment must have been. May we be in greater awe of how God has rescued us from our sin. With glad hearts and joyful tongues let us sing of his greatness and tell of his works. How amazing is our God that he would reconcile us through his own son for his glory?

November 8, 2010 It’s a Long Dirt Path
I have had a lot of conversations lately with Christ followers who have been frustrated in their walk with Jesus. It is a frustration that I don’t see in most people in churches. It is a frustration that I have shared with them and one at times that comes up every now and then.
It is the frustration of a lover of God who wishes he/she was further along in the growth/maturity process. Here is the beauty of a relationship with Christ: We are being worked on until we die.
You see sanctification (the process of becoming like Christ) does not end until we with Christ. It does not end until you are face to face with the risen Savior. It is not over until the God of the Universe declares it over. So be careful what you wish for. Wishing for this proces to be complete is to see your life end.
Let this be an encouragement. You are NOT perfect. (How is that encouraging?) The encouraging part is that you one day will be. We will be made complete. Our salvation will be complete. Until then may be faithful to walk on this long dirt path. A path that includes good times and bad, but always has the purpose of God’s glory and our growth.
